Arguments that draw on six different ontological contrasts are examined: concrete versus abstract entities mind-independent versus mind-dependent entities sparse versus merely abundant properties objective versus projected entities natural versus non-natural entities and ontological pluralism. This paper investigates whether pluralism is well-motivated on ontological grounds: that is, on the basis that different discourses are concerned with (. Despite pluralism attracting increasing amounts of attention, the motivations for the view remain underdeveloped. Truth pluralists say that the nature of truth varies between domains of discourse: while ordinary descriptive claims or those of the hard sciences might be true in virtue of corresponding to reality, those concerning ethics, mathematics, institutions might be true in some non-representational or “anti-realist” sense. Critical to the response is the appeal to indeterminacy in cases of fundamental normative disagreement between reasonable normative outlooks. I then defend the proposal from the charge that it leaves insufficient room for my own fallibility, and in particular from Egan’s (2007) argument that it implies a “smug” asymmetry between myself and others. ) terms of the possibility that my judgements might be unstable through improvement, my account is designed in the first instance to vindicate the expressivist’s conception of the nature of normative inquiry. Inspired by Blackburn’s (1998: 318) proposal that I make sense of my fallibility in (. If, as expressivists maintain, the function of normative thought and talk is not to represent or describe the world, then how can normative judgements be correct or incorrect? In particular, how can I make sense of my own normative fallibility, the possibility that my own normative judgements might be mistaken? In this paper, I construct and defend a substantive but non-representational theory of normative (in)correctness for expressivists. WILLARD VAN ORMAN QUINE, Philosophy of logic, Harvard, 1970/1986. The logical TME in, which eluded Quine’s colleagues, was corrected in the 1978 sixth printing. Quine’s discussions in the 1970 first printing of Philosophy of logic and in previous lectures were vitiated by mixing two. There are several standard ways of defining truth using sequences. But a pragmatic TME occurs in trying to deny that Abe knows Ben by using ‘It isn’t that Abe doesn’t know Ben’. One can deny that Abe knows Ben by prefixing ‘It isn’t that’ or by interpolating ‘doesn’t’. But syntactical TMEs are in ‘Abe knows what Ben looks’ and in ‘Abe knows how Ben looks like’. One can say “Abe knows how Ben looks” using ‘Abe knows what Ben looks like’. But a stylistic TME occurs in ‘Abe knows whether or not Ben draws or not’. ) ways: ‘Abe knows whether or not Ben draws’ or ‘Abe knows whether Ben draws or not’. However I have a black screen whenever I try to use the gnome desktop with it: I tried to change the config follwing this issue, but nothing seems to work. I have followed this tutorial, And it works with the fce4 desktop. My only thought is maybe the geometry portion is incorrect? I've only tried using these two resolutions:Īny insight on this? I'm trying to run my Ubuntu box in a headless fashion, need to be able to VNC into it from different PCs at home whenever I need to do work on it.Įdit: I forgot to mention, my Windows box has UltraVNC as well as TigerVNC, both application display a black screen after authenticating the connection to my Ubuntu box. I installed TightVNC on a Ubuntu20.04 machine in order to use it remotely from my macbook pro. No need to set anything anywhere, on the client or on the server. Just in case, I rebooted my Ubuntu box but still connecting and displaying a black screen. With TigerVNC Windows VNC client (viewer) auto resolution works out of the box. I finished the instructions without error and now when I remote in, it's a black screen. Followed the instructions thinking, "okay, I guess once I'm done with these instructions it will remote back in and I'll be able to control the actual desktop that my Ubuntu box is displaying." So I continued, skipping Step 3, because I had already installed a VNC viewer prior to the VNC Server. On my Ubuntu box, while my Windows box was VNC/remoted in, I was trying to find the desktop that it was communicating with, if that makes sense, but nada. yum groupinstall 'X Window System' 'Desktop' yum install tigervnc-server xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 vncpasswd After using those commands to install stuff (a VNC server and Gnome, I think), I created this file at /root/. From then on the above commands do show the remote window instead of a blank screen. Setting the relevant line to WaylandEnablefalse and restarting the session via systemctl restart gdm3. So I just followed this source for instructions on how to setup a VNC Server (TigerVNC):Ībout halfway through, right before Step 3 I was able to VNC/remote into my Ubuntu box but it was displaying a desktop that wasn't currently in front of me (on my Ubuntu box). Now I have found a way to do make VNC work on Ubuntu 22.04 by disabling wayland by editing the gdm3-setup: sudo nano /etc/gdm3/nf. The area is testament to the game’s nostalgic but, actually quite pretty, graphics and character design. The bio deck is essentially a resource management area, where your employees harvest various flora to create oxygen, minerals, and everything else you might need to improve your station’s facilities. You also need to manage their needs, such as keeping oxygen levels across the ship stable. No matter what mode you’re playing, you’ll almost always need at least one of every building, but often more of each when the constant stream of alien visitors gets overwhelming. Board is the meat and potatoes of the game, where you’ll make medicine rooms, recycle waste, create brigs and even keep a beady eye on your population with a security station. Your donut halls are also split into three very distinctive levels sub, fun and bio. That being said, you’ll still need to expand your station constantly, but if you find yourself tight on space (and funds), most rooms can be chopped and changed to suit the needs of your station. Unlike the boring, generic square layouts we’re used to in most building management sims, navigating the donut-shaped halls of your space station forces you to make interesting choices, especially regarding room placement. The circular layout is, however, an incredibly distinctive feature of Startopia. It does however, become easier the more you play, and it’s much easier on the stomach than most VR games I’ve played. It made sense though, as the circular motion of the station is initially jarring. What I wasn’t expecting, however, was the initial motion sickness warning. I imagine though, it transitions better on PC (go on, do your gloating), after all, it’s really hard to squeeze finicky controls onto restrictive console controllers, so it’s not an issue that’s limited to just Startopia. Even if you take my advice though, you’ll find yourself, on more than one occasion, scrambling with your controller, trying to work out a specific button combo you know you’ve done by accident before, but can’t quite figure now you actually need to pull it off. Spacebase Startopia has an exceptionally steep learning curve, and without learning the basics, it’s almost impossible to enjoy the game’s ten level campaign or free play modes. I’m absolutely the type of person to jump straight into, well, anything usually, but if you take anything from this review, let it be this – play the tutorial. It’s a period of peace throughout the galaxy, and what better way to celebrate than opening a cylindrical space station for the galaxy’s residents to visit, relax and have fun in, all while complaining endlessly to the hub’s management you. It’s strange, as much as I love strategy games, (and I’m definitely a sucker for the early noughties chic that Startopia envisages), I still can’t help but wonder who asked for this?īut maybe it’s just me, I mean, who doesn’t want to manage a Spaceport, right? And if you’re screaming ‘I want to manage a hub for galactic travellers!’ at your screen, then Spacebase Startopia has all your whims and fancies covered. It definitely feels like a successor to Startopia, a twenty year old management sim from the days where games were, mostly, really weird (here’s looking at you, Eidos) but I’m still not sure if it’s a necessary reboot. The emphasis here is on waiting, and there are periods when I was just staring at the screen since there was nothing meaningful or engaging to do.Nostalgia can be blinding, a sentiment I echoed throughout my time with Spacebase Startopia (or Starbase Spacetopia as I’ve called it for the last couple of weeks). Things don’t get significantly better in the long run as successive missions have you waiting for visitors to get healed, or waiting for tourists to finish dancing in the disco. It’s like a tacked-on Whac-A-Mole system.īut what’s even more surprising is the fact that the game’s first campaign mission had you collecting trash until you’ve earned enough credits. Coincidentally, too much garbage will spawn vermin (bugs) that can only be removed by clicking on them. If you don’t find this system reliable, then you can just click on stuff on the floor to pick up the garbage manually before dumping it in the recycler. The usual process goes like this: Fuzzy bots pick up trash (if ever the AI automation can do that properly), garbage bots collect it, the refuse is dumped in recyclers, and, finally, it gets turned into energy (cash). Apparently, the aliens love to litter, so you’ll constantly see crap on the floor. Perhaps one of the most ridiculous mechanics in Spacebase Startopia is the accumulation of garbage. We all love music, and this tool not only gives open access to the thing we love, but it enables us to discover artists and songs we might never have before. I think this is just awesome, and I felt the need to share it with all of you. Then Pandora takes these DNA maps (as I’m calling them) and uses them to match songs with other songs, to create a stream of music that can continually be customized to fit your taste in that style of music. I won’t go crazy trying to explain how the participants do what they do, but in short, they basically map the musical DNA of every song, characterizing and analyzing each song for many things like “melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics” (taken from About Pandora - worth reading too). Just trust me on that one.īut you may ask, how does Pandora achieve this? How can a website or even an extensive database of music know what songs are really like other songs? That’s where the Music Genome Project comes in. This site rocks my socks, and it will rock yours too. There are also ways to interact with other Pandora Radio listeners, recommending songs, creating profiles, etc. And when Pandora plays a song I like in particular, I have a few options: I can rate it w/ a thumbs up, so the station knows to play more songs like it, and I can also Bookmark the song, so I can remember the artist and album for future reference. Right now, I am listening to “Bluegrassy Instrumental” (one of the genre-stations they also offer), and I’m loving it. So I started creating other stations, and decided it was well worth creating an account at the site, so I could save my stations for future use. And the neat part is, now I have learned about an artist I never would have known about, for free, who plays the same kind of music as Jason - the kind of music I like. Well, it wasn’t Jason, but it was groovy in all the ways Jason is, and I was pleased. A little pop-up from Pandora told me they were playing this song because, essentially, it “sounds” like Jason’s music. Okay, that’s neat, and I figured it would just play Jason songs in succession… But then, the second song began, and it wasn’t Jason, but a groovy rendition of “Over the Rainbow” by a Hawaiian artist whose name I can’t remember, accompanying himself on a ukulele - a version of the song I had heard about but never gotten around to looking up. I humored Pandora, and typed in “Jason Mraz.” A station called “Jason Mraz Radio” started playing, with the first song as “I’d Do Anything” off of his first studio album, Waiting for my Rocket to Come. But I moseyed on over to the URL, where I was prompted to input a favorite artist or song. When I first heard about it, I was very skeptical as to how user-friendly, effective or accurate such a claim could be. This website allows you to create personalized, customized Internet radio stations that play only the music you love. Because we all love music, right? But of course we love very different kinds of music… And that’s where the brilliance of Pandora Radio comes in. I know all about it - I’m the trusty librarian that is up at least half the night with you this week, at the Reference Desk ’til 2 am when we close.īut boy, did I come across a gem of a website that I believe you will love as much as I do. Dum-dum lollipops from the Reference Desk.

Also note that the image is not actually fully opened, so you can't make permanent changes to it without reading it into memory. Note that this process is highly dependent on the speed of your hard drive, so you might experience some delays, especially if you are working from a network drive. When using this option, your image is no longer loaded into memory, but rather continually streamed from your hard drive. This can be done through the LOCI importer by checking the "Use virtual stack" option. The easiest option is to use virtual stacks. Fortunately, ImageJ has methods designed to handle this scenario. This happens surprisingly often with modern computer limits and file acquisition sizes. The one scenario in which file import becomes unbearably difficult is when a file is larger than your computer memory can hold. That can be accessed using File>Import>Bio-Formats (Windowless). Another LOCI feature I find useful is the hiding of the interactive window that shows up during import. Then you can drag and drop onto that window. If you want drag and drop with LOCI, run Plugins>Bio-Formats>Bio-Formats Plugins Shortcut Window. This actively maintained importer handles almost all file types and is relatively configurable. If you want more control over how the file is displayed upon opening, you can use the LOCI Bioformats importer directly (File>Import>Bio-Formats). Dragging a file or files onto the ImageJ status bar also works. ImageJ will choose the best plugin for each file type and try to open it. Most images can be opened with File>Open. That being said, the heroic efforts of ImageJ developers make opening of most formats go reasonably smoothly. Most microscope manufacturers make a concerted effort to make their file types as difficult to open as possible and then thwart the makers of open source analysis software by continually changing formats without notice. One would think that opening images would be the simplest part of routine image analysis. In that way if a command moves to a different folder when Fiji is updated you can always find where it is. I highly recommend using the Command Finder tool (Plugins>Utilities>Find Commands.) to find commands. As a result there are thousands of plugins in ImageJ. Plugin developers like me have been very productive. Once the update is completed, click the Advanced mode menu and select Manage Update Sites and select Stowers Plugins from the menu. If you run FIJI, you can run the updater through Help>Update FIJI. On windows, this is typically c:\Program Files\ImageJ\Plugins. In regular ImageJ, you simply need to copy them to your ImageJ plugins folder. You can install them by downloading them from http://zipped_plugins.html. Though this course will not necessarily rely heavily on my plugins, there are a few chapters that utilize these plugins. FIJI tries to make plugin installation simple by providing a large number of plugins preinstalled and working out dependencies. Plugin installation is another thing that is both an annoyance and an advantage in ImageJ. On almost all versions of ImageJ, the memory can be increased or decreased by running Edit>Options>Memory & Threads. That means that all commands to increase or decrease memory require you to restart ImageJ. Thirdly, Java requires you to allocate memory when you start ImageJ. If you download ImageJ from the ImageJ or Fiji websites, you can specify which operating system you have and it will download the correct java along with it. Secondly, even if you have a 64-bit machine, your computer may or may not have 64-bit Java installed. 64-bit systems do not have this limitation and are therefore limited by the amount of RAM the computer has. If nothing is shown, the system is likely 32-bit. If you don't know whether your computer is 32-bit or not, right click on My Computer and go to the Properties menu and look for 32-bit or 64-bit somewhere on the resulting page. Firstly, Java limits 32-bit computers to around 1.5 GB of memory. A couple of important points about memory. ImageJ is written in the Java programming language, so limitations in Java apply to ImageJ. This frustrates some users, but I feel that it is better to understand the memory limitations of a particular task rather than lock up the computer at some unknown point during analysis. ImageJ manages this process in a relatively transparent fashion. Whether you like it or not, managing computer memory is an important part of all scientific image processing tasks. |
